Everything You Need to Know to Plan Your Balloon Flight in Marrakech

A hot air balloon flight over Marrakech is one of those rare travel experiences that genuinely lives up to the hype. But like any activity that involves an early morning start and a vehicle that floats on air, a little advance planning goes a long way. Here is a practical, no-nonsense guide to help you prepare for your balloon adventure.

When to Book

The short answer: as early as possible. Hot air balloon flights in Marrakech are popular year-round, and capacity is limited by the number of balloons and the narrow daily flying window. During peak season — October through April — flights can sell out days or even weeks in advance, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter.

That said, last-minute bookings are sometimes possible. If you are already in Marrakech and decide you want to fly, it is always worth reaching out to ask about availability. We do our best to accommodate spontaneous requests.

Booking directly with the operator rather than through a third-party platform usually offers the best price and the most flexibility. Most operators, including us, offer free cancellation if the flight is grounded due to weather — so there is very little risk in booking early.

What to Wear

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and the answer depends largely on the season.

In winter (November to February), mornings in Marrakech can be surprisingly cold — sometimes as low as 3 to 5 degrees Celsius at the launch site before sunrise. Dress in warm layers: a thermal base layer, a fleece or jumper, and a windproof jacket. A scarf and gloves are not excessive. Once the sun comes up and the burner is firing overhead, you will warm up quickly, but the first 30 minutes can be chilly.

In spring and autumn (March to May, September to October), a light jacket or hoodie over a long-sleeved shirt is usually sufficient. Temperatures at launch are typically between 12 and 18 degrees.

In summer (June to August), mornings are warm from the start. Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal. A light layer is still wise for the initial ascent, but you will likely remove it within minutes.

Regardless of season, wear closed-toe shoes with flat soles. The launch and landing sites are on uneven ground, and you will need to stand comfortably in the basket for up to an hour. Trainers or hiking shoes are perfect. Sandals, heels and flip-flops are not suitable.

Health Considerations

Hot air balloon flights are accessible to most people, but there are a few health-related points to be aware of.

Age requirements: Most operators require passengers to be at least 6 years old. There is no upper age limit, provided you are able to stand for the duration of the flight and step into the basket (which is about knee height).

Pregnancy: For safety reasons, pregnant women are not permitted to fly.

Cardiac and mobility conditions: If you have a serious heart condition, severe vertigo, or significant mobility limitations, ballooning may not be advisable. If you are unsure, consult your doctor and let the operator know in advance so they can advise you.

Fear of heights: This is interesting — many people who are afraid of heights find balloon flights perfectly comfortable. Because there is no physical connection to the ground (no cliff edge, no glass floor), the sensation is more like floating than being high up. The basket walls come up to your waist, and the movement is so gentle that most nervous passengers relax within minutes of takeoff.

Motion sickness: Balloon flights are extremely smooth. Unlike aircraft, boats or cars, there is virtually no turbulence. The balloon moves with the air rather than through it, so there is no buffeting or swaying. Motion sickness is exceptionally rare.

What to Bring

Keep it simple. Here is a short checklist:

  • Camera or phone (fully charged — cold air drains batteries faster)
  • Sunglasses for after sunrise
  • A light hat or cap to shield from the burner heat overhead
  • A small bottle of water
  • Warm layers (season-dependent, as above)

Leave large bags, bulky camera equipment and valuables at your hotel. Space in the basket is limited, and there is nowhere secure to store belongings during the flight.

Combining Your Balloon Flight with Other Activities

One of the best things about a sunrise balloon flight is that it is finished by mid-morning, leaving the rest of your day completely free. Here are some popular ways guests combine their balloon experience with other Marrakech activities:

Morning: After your balloon flight and breakfast, you will be back at your hotel by 10:00 or 10:30 AM. This is a perfect time to freshen up before heading out.

Midday: Explore the Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the surrounding souks. The markets are lively but not yet at their afternoon peak, making it a good time to browse without the crowds.

Afternoon: Visit the Jardin Majorelle, the Bahia Palace or the Saadian Tombs. All are within easy reach of the medina and offer a slower, more reflective pace after your morning adventure.

Evening: Book a rooftop dinner in the medina. After seeing the city from a balloon at sunrise, watching the sunset from a terrace above the rooftops brings your day full circle.

Other popular day-trip combinations include quad biking in the Agafay Desert, camel rides in the Palmerie, and day trips to the Ourika Valley or Essaouira. Your balloon operator or hotel concierge can help arrange these.

Payment and Cancellation

Most Marrakech balloon operators accept bank transfer for advance bookings and cash payment at the launch site. Some also accept card payments, though this varies. Always confirm payment options when you book.

Cancellation policies are generally generous for weather-related issues. If the wind is too strong or visibility too low, the flight will be postponed and you will be offered a full reschedule or refund. For personal cancellations, most operators require at least 48 hours notice for a full refund.

Final Advice

If you are visiting Marrakech, a hot air balloon flight deserves a place on your itinerary. It is not just an activity — it is a shift in perspective. You will see the city, the mountains and the desert in a way that changes how you experience everything else during your trip.

Book early, dress warmly, charge your camera, and prepare yourself for one of the most memorable mornings of your life.
